Hey everyone! So I had planned a GRAND post but frankly... I am TIRED! So the amazing and awesome post will just have to wait (it doesn't help that I get on here and then get sucked into all the other great blogs out there!).
I have been working so hard on a new little pack that I CAN'T WAIT to print and start using! It goes along with that post that I will hopefully have up in the next day or so :)
What is the topic you ask?
Double/Triple Digit (+) Addition strategies- without the traditional algorithm!
So I leave you with a sneak peek:
I am looking for someone to take a look at it for me...interested??
I would love to help if you still need it. It looks really interesting...and some kids are NOT ready for the traditional algorithm!

Thanks Suzy!! I will be sending it your way either today or tomorrow :)

ReplyDeleteWhoops, commented but then had to take it off because I copied and pasted the wrong tag on the end. Anywho I was saying that we are practicing this skill in my class at the moment and I think it is such an important thing for the kiddos to master. If you are still looking for testers I would be happy to give it a go.
ReplyDeletePS- ditto on getting sucked into reading fab blogs, here I am!

This is our 2nd year teaching math this way. We are not allowed to teach it the other way. I am so glad there is someone else (not in our county) doing it this way. YEAH!!!

Hey, Tori!
ReplyDeleteI think I responded to your first hint at this (non)method. I'd love to take a look at what you're doing, and share what I did, as well. I have never had better success with addition and subtraction than this year, when my kids discovered their own algorithms.

Brooke- send me your email :)
DeleteYikes! Just saw your new post and response to my comments. My e-mail is brookegravett@pickens.k12.sc.us. Check out www.mathsolutions.com about teaching without algorithms, too. Marilyn Burns is "the bomb" (did that sound like I was 45 years old?)

Hi Tori! :) I LOVE that you have created this unit... it's so hard to find resources to support 'other' ways to solve these problems. I see you have a handful of volunteers already, but I'd be happy to check it over if you need another set of eyes.

We use everyday math series and this "partial sums" algorithm is a big part of the weeks. We are allowed to tea h then lots of different strategies but I've seen great success with this one this year. Lmlynes@gmail.com
ReplyDeleteI am going to share this with the 2nd grade teacher across the hall. She will love this. Did you know that the book you shared about has a newly revised version. "Teaching Student-Centered Mathematics" Second Edition. I just got my copy this week and am excited to dig in. Liz in South Dakota lparce@hotmail.com
