Daily 5- Word Work! {giant freebie!}

Hey Friends!

I have been SO impressed with the comments left on these posts- thank you so much!  The winner from the last post is...
This is a fun comment- thanks Deb! :)

Here we go...

Let me first show you how I store my word work:
I got this at Target for like $25 I think.  I like having the large drawer at the bottom to hold the bigger stuff.

I had cutesy labels for each drawer but they kept ripping so my FAB aide from a few years ago made these for me and they are holding up beautifully~  the key is to laminate and then cover with packing tape or contact paper.  Those little hands are destructive and you don't want to have to constantly redo your beautiful work. :)

So let's take a look in each drawer...
This is my dry erase drawer.  It is simple- write your words on the dry erase board. :)  Usually there are erasers in this drawer but they escaped at the end of the year.
I will give you a link at the end for all the papers I show in the post. This is a direction sheet that stays in the drawer for the kids- they know to read the directions about what is needed if they forget (instead of asking me).

OH side note--- I use my spelling words for the week as my word work.  I find that works the best and we can focus on that phonics sound for the week.
I store the word lists on the side of my word word container like this:
I have 2 lists challenge and regular. I call them list 1 and list 2.

Next drawer...
Colorful words- put makers in a bag and then the kids write their words in a colorful way.  I have the kids do this in their "word work" notebook which is just a section of a spiral notebook.

Next...
Stamps.  These little guys came from Target dollar spot- keep your eyes peeled as I usually seem them come out in August.  I believe I got the little containers from Staples.

I have a separate sheet where the kids stamp their words-

Next up...
The most popular drawer!  That is why there is only one lonely play-doh left in this drawer!  The white basket is usually full of popsicle sticks.  They are used for writing the words on a "pancake" style play-doh instead of forming each letter.  I give them the option because sometimes forming the word just takes too long.

Bottom drawer...
(lots of goodies)

These are bottle caps- water bottle caps to be specific.  I collected them during the summer and had friends collecting for me too (its not too late to start collecting!)  I got the container from JoAnns.  I added a white circle sticker to the top of the bottle cap.
The kids use the letters to spell out their words- another favorite!

Also in the bottom drawer....

These are just foam letters from Michaels.

Stencils!  The kids love these! :)

Hard to tell as these got mangled but they are Wikki Stix!  The kids had a lot of fun with these and I need to buy more!

Finally, the amazing reading specialist at my building had a great idea of using an old keyboard to "type" out their words...
What a fun idea!  I have some keyboards ready to go for this year.

If you don't have a word work notebook... I have created a cover and paper you could use to make your own!

If you like the papers I have included in this post you can grab them all at my Facebook Page OR on TpT HERE
Please leave me some love if you like it! :)

I spend a LOT of time building stamina on:
~how to get the supplies
~where to do word work
~what to do for each activity
~how to work the whole time on word work
~how I should act during word work
~how to clean up
~how to put materials back

Oh- and I try to stick to around 5 different activities.  I shared more than that here.  I don't do them all at the same time- I add new ones about every quarter.

I hope that helps a bit so that you can get your word work up and running!

Thanks for reading!!

  1. I have been learning quite a bit from your Daily 5 posts. I read the books this summer and can't wait to use it with my first graders this year. Your word work activities are great! So clear and easy for young children to do. I am just a bit sad because I don't participate in Facebook. Thank you for all you share. I have learned so much from reading your blog.

  2. I love the way you have this organized & all the different options your kiddos have. Thank you for sharing this with us. I never really thought to use the draw organizer, I'll have to remember this because I really like how everything is right there & it's easy to add the different activities to the draw after introducing them. Thanks again.

  4. You have lots of great ideas! Thanks for sharing all of them. I, like you, use our weekly spelling words/phonics rule practice for word work. Many of my activities are similar but there's a few others that I got from Rachelle Smith's 123 Spell with Me pack: http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/123-Spell-with-Me-345112 We also do vowels in color where the kids write the word writing the vowels in marker. Another favorite is It's a Race where each word is assigned a number 1-10 and then the kids roll a die (usually use a 10 sided one) and write the number that matches with the word until they've filled up the spaces on the recording sheet and have a winner (and have also written all of the other words at least 3 times). I use the plastic bins to store all of our D5 materials too. I love that there isn't a lot of changing of this activity throughout the year and the kids don't usually get bored given that there are quite a few choices to pick from. Thanks again for all your great freebies!

  5. Boooo, I was so excited to share that thanks to my generous IT husband, I am going to be using old keyboards for students to practice typing their words! But apparently you already shared this idea :(

I am just starting my D5 journey, but I was already planning to do white boards, stamps, and Wikki Stix, and love the idea of using stencils (which I already have) and also the bottle caps (which I already have too because I collected a bunch of them several years ago and they have been waiting around for a good use! I did use some of them already to make a 100s chart matching (although now I think I should remake it and extend to 120 now!

And yes, the little boxes you store your stamps in are from Staples. I bought them there last summer, just knowing I would eventually find a good use for them! I will have to keep my eyes out for those stamps at Target - they are so little and cute!

Also, one question - why do you have them do their stamp words on a separate paper instead of just doing them in the same journal as their colorful words?

Thanks for all your great Freebies!

    1. I forgot to add that we will be practicing our 5 new sight words for the week (plus the ones already on the word wall, or other words of their choosing) and then if/when we start Word Their Way (which I have used the past 3 years, but my new school has not done before, but is interested in!) then we will also practice our spelling words.

  6. Such a helpful post! Even made me excited to get back to work :) I love the bottle cap idea. Collecting them now! Thanks again for sharing!

  7. My little ones like to "spell with Shells" they use tiny shells to form the letters in their spelling words. Another idea is we fill a plastic lid with playdough and they "write" a word with a golf tee.

  8. You are one brave girl...I am not sure I would let mine use stamps...I could just see my boys with 'tattoos' up and down their arms! I do like the bottle cap idea, and I collected some in bright fun colors last year when we were saving them for something or other.

Must ramp up my word work collection!

  10. I love how everything is so organized. I use some of the same ideas. The cap idea is new to me - great idea and use for something that just gets thrown away. I use these ideas as basics and at least once a week throw in something different like pick your two favorite colors to write the words with; write in all capitals once then all lowercase; write words once with normal hand then one time with opposite hand (very interesting to watch and listen to this process; write words with "scary" letters (I show an example then students do their own scary letters), etc.
Thanks for sharing all of your great ideas!!

  11. These are great ideas. I really like the bottle cap idea because the kids can manipulate the letters instead of just writing...plus, it probably helps with ABC order and sorting by having them in the container like you do.

  16. Thanks for all the freebies! I can't wait to get into my room and set everything up. I like the keyboard idea because most of our test are on the computer now. I love when things serve a dual purpose. I am going to read Click, Clack, Moo before I introduce this choice. :)

  20. I am going to do my centers a lot like yours. We will study 5 pattern words and 5 sight words every week, so those will be my two lists. We don't do spelling tests, so we just practice for the sake of practice. :) One year my team decided to change up our word work and make our activities whatever we were studying that week in terms of Fountas and Pinnell phonics lessons, pattern word sorts, and making words activities. It was great practice, but it was so much to keep up with, and it used up a lot of paper. I will be glad to go back to doing it like you do with just fun ways to practice lists of words. I also use the drawers to store my supplies. I do love the idea of just having 5 activities per quarter and changing them up to keep the variety. I will definitely be stealing that one from you! :)

  30. Love your ideas, as always! I've never thought of bottle caps, but I do have an old cell phone on which the kiddos spell their words using the letters on the numbers. My recording sheet asks that they write down the phone number and the word...just another fun idea for that bottom drawer (I have the same drawer set). It's called Call Me! As in Blondie? I'm OLD!!!

  32. I love how your Word Work is organized. I use literacy work stations with my kinders but I am thinking about trying to incorporate more Daily 5 activities after your blog posts. I don't use spelling words but I do like the fact of your List 1 and 2 challenge and regular words. I might try to do that for my sight words/word families. Are your challenge words for everyone or just your high group? Thanks for the ideas.:) teecher4life@gmail.com

  60. As another teacher of 17 years, I really like this list. These ideas will clearly be popular with 2nd graders without a lot of prep or need for copies of busy work to grade. My word lists will come from a resource I piloted last year and LOVE. It's called Systematic Word Study for Grade 2 by Cheyl Sigmon. I used this and ditched spelling tests which I have come to consider a poor use of time. Thanks!
