Daily 5- Read to Self {lots of freebies!}

Hey everyone!  I'm excited to be back for the second part of my Daily 5 review.

If you want to read about Listening to Reading click {here}.

And before I forget... if you haven't entered my Erin Condren giveaway.... you can do so ... {here}!

Read to Self is the most important of the 5 Daily 5 choices.  Why?  Because this will be the one that the students do most often.  It will be one that you can do any time and you will want to spend the most time building their stamina.

Before you even start, you will want to organize your classroom library.  I decided to level mine by F&P level as well as by genre.
Here is a quick sampling of how I do it...
I first labeled all my books with a sticker color. This matches a F&P letter level.  I used  Scholastic's Book Wizard to do this.

Then I sorted my books by subject or genre.  I made labels to put on the front of my baskets.
HERE are some labels I made- they are NOT fancy as I made them a few years ago before I knew about cute fonts :)  I also found a bunch more somewhere on the Internet.

I had two very helpful parents number ALL my baskets (I have over 40).  You can see the number of my "Bears" basket is 29.

This is on the inside cover of the book.
This is a crucial step if you want your books to return to the right basket!  I spend a LOT of time "training" the kids on how to find books and put them back. :)

The kids have their own book box to store their books..
These were from IKEA.
This year I decided to get the ones from Target dollar spot~ they have super cute ones this year!

from Target!

I have the kids go "book shopping" once a week.  They are to choose 5 "good fit" books (according to their sticker/F&P level) and 3 "look books."  The look books are the sticker colors that are not a good fit ...yet.  It is so fun for the kids to move from a book being a look book to a good fit- they get so excited!

To help me introduce the idea of what is a "good fit" I use this AMAZING PowerPoint from a teacher in South Carolina (thanks for sharing!).  I love how it compares books to shoes!
click to get it!

In the boxes (besides the books) the kids have a check mark to help them check for understanding.  I LOVE this one from the fab Christina Bainbridge.

Also in the boxes are:
~poems (to build fluency)
~interesting word chart
~spiral for word work
~folder
~whisper phone

Just as a side note- the kids get their book boxes ALL DAY LONG- not just during Daily 5.  Whenever they finish something the first thing that comes out of my mouth is- "go get your book box."  By about October it is just a natural thing for them to get up and get their box.  Having those good fit books all ready to go in their box is a beautiful thing. :)

Make sure that you have plenty of spots for your kids to get cozy for read to self.  My class loves our reading corner- this is our quiet area and I set that expectation right from the start.
That couch was mine growing up!!!

Our PTA purchased these rug circles that the kids use throughout the room (from Really Good Stuff).

I can't tell you how important it is to take the time to build their "stamina."  I use graphs to chart our progress and the kids like to beat their last time.  I use these graphs from Jessica Meacham (stop by her store!) THANK YOU Jessica... they are a life saver!  It's ok to start off with a very little time!  I've charted 30 seconds before!  The kids will then see their progress.  I always set our goal for 15 independent minutes.

I also really believe in the "modeling" good and bad behaviors.  It is fun for the kids and they really respond to seeing it visually.

Anchor charts are a MUST!  Take the time to talk about their expected behaviors during this time.  I write mine on giant post-it chart paper and then just plop it on the wall for review.  I then put up a smaller version when we have it down.
Yikes- sorry for the fuzzy picture!

Man, sorry for the GIGANTIC post!  I hope you were able to grab something useful or see/read something helpful.

And... if you made it all the way to the bottom- leave a comment with something related to "Read to Self" (what you do or something from this post)!  I'd love to hear from you!

Have a great day!

  1. I love the idea of the graph...because there are always going to be some kids who last a minute at first! It is important for them to realize that the class time depends on them. Thanks for the reminder!

  2. Thanks so much for sharing that leveling wizard! I need to get on that this summer!

I love the idea of book shopping and those bins from Target! They were sold out at all the ones I went to or else I would have snagged those blue and green ones right up!

I never really thought how long it took to build even a few minutes of read to self stamina until I saw it in action. It definitely is important to take that time to build stamina in the long run though! I won't ever forget that!

  4. I use the book boxes from IKEA as well. I let the kids decorate them and then they get to keep them at the end of the year. The boxes from Target are really cute too!

I am interested in knowing what the "interesting words" chart is!

    1. Hi Erica! Thanks so much for stopping by- great question! It is actually from the "CAFE" book also by the 2 sisters. When we practice "tune into interesting words" the kids get a chart that just has the alphabet where they write words that match the letter. It helps them focus on those bigger words- then I have the kids look up those words every so often or share an interesting word during our check in time. If I find it - i'll post it (it is also digitally in the CAFE book). Hope that helps!

  8. We use AR levels once they get into first grade, but I am really thinking I need to move to the a-z levels for kinders to start with. Thanks for sharing the wizard! My read to self rule is they can't touch someone else! It is VERY hard for them to be close without it turning into read to someone!

    1. hhehe... good point! They are so tempted to talk to someone.... we usually have about 30 seconds on our graph before they get the idea that it is read to SELF :)

  9. I love this post! So much great info. I have all my books in my house and am about to start leveling all of them and then wasn't sure how I was going to put them in baskets but I love that you leveled them and then put them in baskets by genre/topics! And putting the basket number inside the book...genius! And I remember seeing the book wizard from Scholastic but had forgotten about it so thanks for the reminder! :) I also love how you use the book boxes. I bought some from Ikea and wasn't sure how exactly I was going to use them but now I know. I was trying to make it way more complicated than it needed to be so thanks for sharing!

  10. Love that you let them pick a "look book". I hate it when my students are only allowed to check out books on their AR levels when they come to my library. One of my teachers uses place mats for reading rugs. She takes them home and washes them when they need it.

I am also going to use the Scholastic Book Wizard to help level my library. Unfortunately I am in a portable so I don't have any room to make a reading area; however, last year for the first time I let them sit around the room and for most this worked.

  17. I love your post. I have been reading the Daily 5 posts throughout blogland this summer trying to get tips and ideas on how to incorporate it in my classroom. I use literacy work stations with my kinders and I love it. But I would love that extra Read to Self piece that you get with Daily 5. I like the idea of the book boxes (my Target did NOT have them on sale, unfortunately) and letting students choose their good fit books. Thanks for the ideas and I shared your post (my long post) on my blog too.

(The check for understanding etc.) I also LOVE your idea that they shouldn't just be for read to self, they should be using their book boxes all the time. Now just to find the storage space in my classroom that the kids should be able to get them at all times!! :)

  19. I did Daily 5 this year..I love it! During student teaching, the classroom did literacy stations. I just didn't feel it was meaningful. I found with the Daily 5 it was very meaningful. One day I told my students to do Read to Self. I had to leave the room for a reason I can't remember ( I was gone only a few minutes). I came back and saw all of my students doing Read to Self. None of my students were goofing off because there was no teacher in the room. I agree that building up stamina is the most important part. I love the graphing idea. I think I will incorporate that during my second year of teaching this year. By the way, did you recently find your book boxes at the Target dollar section? Every Target store I go to I can't find them. Guess I will have to set aside a day and go to IKEA. Thanks for your wonderful post! Lisa Marshall

  24. Ummm... so I think we're twinsies because I do most of this too! I SUPER LOVE how you number your book baskets AND the books... I will definitely be doing that when I go back! One thing I say is that they can only have one chapter book in their box. As soon as they finish it, they can go get another one, even if it's not their turn to book shop. We also have an amazing library staff who let us come once a week to ransack... I mean, go book shopping there. They have a separate account for each teacher so we know which books we checked out vs. which books the kids checked out for their book boxes. It takes a lot of pressure off of me to make sure I have enough new books in February, March...

    Thanks for the freebies!

  30. I have done Daily 5 and CAFE for a few years. One thing to keep in mind is that there is not really time to have students do all 5 centers every day. Some people think that's what it means, but it's really just 5 options for literacy centers, and you get in as many as you can. No matter how many rounds of Daily 5 we get in, I always make Read to Self non-negotiable, meaning students must choose Read to Self for one round every day. I tell them, "You can't become a better reader if you don't read!" I love the Daily 5!

I think I need to really organize it at the beginning of the year and make sure I keep it organized. At least that is going to be my goal this year. 1. Hi Tiffany! Because they can get up to 8 books shopping only once a week seems to work! I've done it that way for 3 years and have had only a few kids that needed to swap out a book early. We talk a lot about "books are our friends" and how we want to re-read books to help our fluency. Once they start reading longer books they don't need that many! If once isn't enough for your class you could do it twice! :)

I have grouping sticks that I pass out at the beginning of the week and tell them how we are grouping read to someone(color, shape, number...which are all on the stick) This has helped with that, for me at least! Thanks again!

  47. I have a question on students building stamina...do you start with reading for 1 min. and then the next day you do 2? Or how do you actually do that step?

    ReplyDelete
  48. Great blog! I am new to second grade and The Daily Five. When do you start to add in the other elements after read to self? Do you have them meet a stamina goal first and then you can add in the next element or do you practice a week and then add in the next elements? What is the best method from your experience to when I should add in each daily 5 component?
